Charting your Cervical Mucus
What is Cervical Mucus?
Cervical Mucus, also known as Cervical Fluid, is a very important part of fertility. Cervical Mucus is what protects sperm from the acidic atmosphere of the vagina and allows it to survive for up to 5 days. Your cervical mucus varies in consistency throughout your menstrual cycle, and can be used to determine when you will ovulate within a cycle:
- During the first few days following your period, your cervical mucus will be dry or sticky.
- For 2-4 days following that, it will become creamy and lotion like.
- One to 5 days before ovulation, it becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy like raw egg whites, signaling the start of your fertile days. Your CM will remain like raw egg whites until one or two days after ovulation, when your egg can no longer be fertilized.
