When my son got teeth at 8 months old I stopped nursing. My doctor told me to just use regular tap water. I don't really think there is a "best" bottle... I used Avent and LOVED it. So whatever your baby seems to like would be best. Breast feeding isn't for everyone... To each their own. Do what's best for you and your baby. :o)

Mara04 said on 9/25/2008 6:45:33 PM Report this post
For the first little while I used distilled room temp water. Then i'm like what the hell this is a pion so I started using normal tap water (we have a filter on it anyways) I used it cold then warmed it up. Thing is, you don't have to. I didn't realize that I thought you had to heat it up no matter what but babies will drink whatever uyou give them first lol

I had that same problem with my son, i couldnt produce enough milk for him so after pumping for 3 weeks decided to go with the formula because i was overly exhausted...you have to do whats best for you and your baby...i wouldnt listen to breast is best cause not everyone can do it :) and we shouldnt be made to feel bad because we cant. and the bottle ive heard that the dr brown are good...also the playtex with the drop ins, i personally used avent and they were pretty good....

regarding what water to use... tap water is great if you live in city limits that has fluoridated water. Well water is not always a good choice depending on your water conditions for various reasons - like high nitrate content, for one. If that is the case, use bottled water and ask your pediatrician or dentist if you need to use some sort of fluoride supplement. Fluoride, fluoride, fluoride... :) It is not a naturally occurring ingredient, but we all need it especially at that age when teeth are developing under the surface.

As far as what bottle to use... IMO, it is the nipple that makes the bigger difference. I have always started my babies out breastfeeding, so I was partial to the Nuk nipples, as they have the hole that squirts onto the roof of the mouth rather than the back of the throat. However, if they begin with bottles, they will take to whatever they begin with I'm guessing.

Just a question, not being pushy at all...
Are you thinking of nursing your baby for the first few days for the colostrum benefit? Your milk will come in regardless if you nurse at all or not. And, in those days, the colostrum is in such small amounts, that you wouldn't be considered to be not producing enough. Colostrum, even in small amounts, is like feeding liquid gold to your baby.
Like I said, no judgment, just a thought to think about.
:)
Best wishes on your delivery (that's my favorite part)
Corinna

wow, sounds like you have your hands full! :)

We are having a girl, Alexandria Grace!! I'm so anxious to meet her. I have been feeling great!!! The only thing I have noticed lately is that I cant do to much, otherwise my feet feel so sore, and I get charlie horse knots in my legs. So I have been taking it easy doing very little at a time.

Wishing you the very best!!! Looking forward to keeping in touch... God Bless

Corinna i was thinking about trying it just to see bc i am already leaking so i dont know if that means i will produce enough or not also another reason i dont really want to try it is bc i have to have a c section so i dont know if ill be able to nurse right away and another and my biggest reason of them all is bc i have 2 lil girls now and i dont want them to feel like mommy dont have time for them bc im feeding the baby so i am all over the place with it then i thought about just pumping so i have a few more weeks to think about it.......Juliechev. Congrats i think we are in the same boat i feel great but at times im just like wow i cant do this anymore lol i have only gained 22lbs with this baby with my girls i gained 50 + so i am happy with this one lol i had a dream last night he was a 12 lbs baby when born lol i hope thats not the case anyway Congrats and good luck with everything we def need to keep in touch do you have a myspace ?

mommy77811 If you do end up trying to breast feed, try the yogi brand tea called mothers milk...anything like this can turn your supply around! There are also natural remedies from nativeremedies.com

Also I would highly recommend you looking into what is in fact in your water. Fluoride has been the biggest wool over the eyes American's have ever been told. In short-fluoride is a neurotoxin, it is waste product of many big industries. Fluoride does nothing but harm your health and it is a myth that it prevents cavities! Americans need to think for themselves and I urge EVERYONE to look up what's in your water! Why do people still get cavities when most water is fluoridated.

OKAY SERIOUSLY...Rude answers get on my freakin' nerves. I tried to breast feed with my daughter and it didn't work either so I tried pumping and that didn't go well. I gave my daughter formula with tap water and she's perfectly healthy and smart as she can be. She is only 20 months old and saying full sentences. So if you aren't going to give any advice then why type anything in? I'm sorry if this pisses anyone off but I'm pissed off and I'm going to say whats on my mind. You will be fine mommy...don't worry.

madisonsmom08 said on 9/26/2008 2:04:57 PM Report this post
Oh yeah I forgot to tell you I used Dr. Brown bottles and that is the only type of bottle I will use with any other child I may have. They are awesome bottles. They have natural flow nipples so it comes out not to slow or to fast. And the vent in it helps awhole lot with gas.

mommy77811 said on 9/26/2008 2:42:30 PM Report this post
i am so with you masidonsmom i will have to look and see if i can find the answers that i got from some ppl it was very rude !! it pissed me off too for sure.... Thanks alot : )

I certainly did not intend to offend anybody. I hope my post is not in question. I think bottle feeding is just fine!!!

Oh no Corinna it wasn't you hun. All the advice you gave was right I think. The point is that you gave advice and didn't judge. You just told her that the first few days would really benefit her baby which is very true. I wasn't refering to you at all and I'm sorry if I upset you.

I think you should definitely do what you want!! I haven't really made up my mind about the breastfeeding but I have to go back to class in less than 10 days after delivering. My mother had 4 kids (all natural-- no pain meds) and decided right away she didn't want to breastfeed. I think its great if you can do it, but I am just not sure how I feel. I have VERY sensitive nipples (I can't even go without a bra unless i am sitting very still) so i am worried that I won't be able to handle the pain.

I am glad you started this post b/c I really do not know what to do about bottles...I know a girl who uses the playtex with the dropins, she thinks they're great. I think they are good because the air doesn't get into them so I am guessing they do the same function as the vented or tilted bottles?

Ugh...its so hard...breast or bottle...then what bottle...what formula?? What nipple? Pacifiers or not??

Geesh...it gets very overwhelming sometimes.

Good luck!

mommy77811 said on 9/26/2008 8:06:22 PM Report this post
Millijess- I do have to agree with you. You should be able to do what you feel is best for you and your baby my kids both were bottle fed and they are healthy and smart with my 2nd baby i cant remember what bottle i used but at last i got a Dr. Brown bottle and loved it so thats what im going with this time also i hear the playtex drop ins are good also i also used nestle good start and loved it less spit up and neither of my kids wanted a pacifiers so i got lucky with that one. It is very overwhelming at times god bless your mother !!!

I had a c-section and was unable to breastfeed right away because the morphoine made me tired and throw up lol So the nurses asked mew hat I wanted to do and they said they would take him to the nurses station and tgive him a bottle of formula then come back and see how I felt. So I did that. By the next shift of nurses I had one show me how to feed him lying down and I could have kissed her lol Once while in the hospital he had another bottle of their formula because I was cracked and bleeding and in alot of pain lol Thankfully when I got home a lactation nurse came and helped me out and i managed to breastfeed him for another 4 months. I stopped because I thought he wasn't getting enough because all of the sudden he was eatign every 15 minutes. I didn't realize that was just one of his growth spurts but he was on formula by then. We used Parents Choice because it was cheaper ($13 a can) and it was the exact same as all the other stuff except it wasnt brown which was gross lol I used the drop ins for a while witht he playtex bottles the curved ones with air releases in the bottom then I moved to plain old gerber and nuby ones. He really wasn't on the bottle long because I'm adamant about it being gone well before their first birthday. He was on a cup by then. Only a sippy cup when we were out. Just a little note if you choose not to breastfeed, watch yourself because engorgred breasts will kill you lol I rememebr a few days just standing under the hot spray of the shower and watching the milk come pouring out lol Thankfully I dried up and was good in a few days but I missed the weight loss I was having while breastfeeding lol This time I would like to try to breast feed for 9 months then move to a cup. no bottles or formula if I can. Thats a big IF lol

millijess said on 9/27/2008 7:33:06 PM Report this post
Mara- thanks for the advice...one thing I am worried about breastfeeding in the cracking and bleeding...ugh...I remember some lady said to me "oh once my nipples stopped bleeding, bf was great!" That sorta scared me off a bit :( But your advice is great!

Corinna said on 9/27/2008 11:38:28 PM Report this post
Remember that not everybody gets bleeding/cracked nipples. :)

I've BF four babies and the first time was absolutely HORRID HELL for a month, but I didn't listen to anything the lactation consultants told me. I was super mom. HA!!! I got mastitis, plugged ducts and got a blister that I still have a scar from.
This time, the fourth, has been nothing but pleasant and positive. Then again, I have learned from experience and also learned to listen to what people have to say (as long as they know what they are talking about!!)
Certainly not saying you have to have four before you can get the hang of it, just that every person is different. Had I had another HORRID HELL experience with my second baby, I'd have bottle fed from there on out. I am stubborn and cheap and also just cannot afford formula, so I opt for the free way and stuck out the breast feeding. I am glad I did. I love it and feel blessed to be able to do it.

BUT!!! I can totally understand how some may not want to do it. If you make it past the pain of the first few weeks... It is extremely time consuming by you and only you. Even if you pump and have someone else give the bottle, you still have to pump again!! I cannot wear any of the dresses that are hanging in my closet just teasing me because if I did, I'd have to completely disrobe in order to nurse or pump. Aggravating! Since I'm not losing the weight that I'm supposed to be SINCE IT IS A FAIRYTALE THAT NURSING MAKES YOU LOSE WEIGHT I can't wear most of my clothes and dresses are the only things that cover up my thunder thighs!!!

So, that said, do whatever the bleep you want and those who give you crap either way... well, you know what to tell them... :)

:)

Hi,

Congrats on the upcoming baby! I had my daughter 10 day ago & was all over the board on nursing/bottle feeding when I was in the hospital. My main message for you (and you may already be thinking about this since it is not your first - but this was my first) is be prepared for a flood of emotions once you actually decide what you are going to do. I thought I was all prepared to accept which ever way I went - - I have Rheumatoid Arthritis which has damaged my left shoulder, wrist and hand to the point of needing surgery already...so I wasnt sure if I'd be able to hold my baby let alone nurse. Some of my nurses were great - made me really comfy with whatever I decided, didn't push, helped teach me, etc. Some were not so good..scared me a ton cuz my baby had jaundice & was not getting "enough" to eat cuz she was sleeping too much - & she'd lost 7% of her weight & was not fighting the jaundice well. SO, I kinda got scared & decided to formula feed...not realizing that my milk was only a day away from coming in & things would be different then. Well anyway...when telling the doctor that we were gonna formula feed..I lost it - even though I thought I was prepared for that decision. I had not seen a lactation consultant yet, & thankfully my favorite nurse was my discharge nurse...she calmed me down (told me that much weight loss is normal) & got the lactation person for me before we left. The lactation consultant told me that you can first start nursing as much as 2 weeks after birth. We are doing a combination of nursing & formula feeding, & baby is doing well with that. My favorite nurse recommended Enfamil - not because the hospital has a contract or anything but because she believes it to be the closest to breast milk and tolerated better by baby.

So..good luck to you in what ever you decide..just be ready for a flood of emotions & listen to them. I ended up changing my mind at the very last minute (literally we waited for the lactation person after we'd signed all the discharge papers) and I am so glad I listened to my heart.

It depends where you live, you can use whatever water you drink yourself but I'd boil it first (I used to keep a large pot of boiled and cooled water on the stove for bottles), then cool and keep at room temperature. A side note on what type of bottles to use-do not load up on one kind before you are sure your baby drinks well with it. With my first I loaded up on Avent but my sons could never get a good seal on it and ended up leaking all over them lol I had a lot of bottles to donate once I discovered that! Just try a couple and if it works then load up then :) Good luck!!! Just remember that it's your choice and don't let anyone else guilt you into something you're not comfortable with.

If you do get cracked bleeding nipples there are soem greats creams for it that are perfectly safe for baby or you can use nipple guards. Mine were only bad for a day or two til I found that his latch wasn't great. He was a little piggy. Hours after he was born he would grab my breast with both hands and stuff it in his mouth lol I found with breast feeding I lost all my baby weight in two weeks. Now I'm not a small person really I'm roughly 170 pounds, was 212 when he was born. The only thing is my breasts stayed huge and they never sagged. So now they are big and perky and almost right under my chin lol I used to be a comfy 38C now I'm a 40DD lol So my goal is to breastfeed these puppies into oblivion if I can lol One thing with breastfeeding is that you burn some pretty major calories so you are going to eat more than you would while pregnant to maintain healthy breastmilk. I remember going out for breakfast with my hubby when our son was maybe 3 weeks old and normally my hubby is a HUGE eater he has a very active job and eats very fast due to very short breaks at work but while breastfeeidng, I polished off everything on my plate and was steling food off his lol There was one time while feeding my son I got so hungry I hate to eat NOW so hubby quicky made ap izza and took pictures of me breast feeding a newborn and eating pizza lol So sexy lol I still havr the sleeper with the sauce stain on it when I dropped a pineapple on his butt lol I so look forward to breastfeeding againa nd for much longer this time and if people are available to yhelp you I say take it. It can be very enjoyable. I'm still trying to convince my 17 year old SIL thast it's not gross and doesn't feel goodf in a sexual way lol She is skeezed out by it lol I loved it and I hope you have just as wonderful an expereience!
